BMW X2 and Jaguar E-Pace Comparative Test

Both the BMW X2 and Jaguar E-Pace are newcomers to the market, and each is the most compact in the SUV lineups of its brands. They look very different.

Summary

The "Englishman" shapes are rounded, with a familiar touch of sophistication, the "German" is all sharp, faceted. And very squat, as if it is not a crossover at all, and a sports car. When cars stand side by side, Jaguar seems larger, although by and large it surpasses the rival only in height, the rest of the dimensions are comparable.

The Bavarian crossover is offered in our country with three power trains. We are talking about 1.5 and 2 hp petrol engines, developing 140 and 192 hp. respectively, as well as a 2-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 190 hp.

The initial, 140-horsepower, modification has front-wheel drive and a 7-speed robotic transmission with two clutches, the rest are only all-wheel drive and 8-band automatic. The range of prices for initial sets ranges from 2,010,000 to 2,500,000 rubles.

BMW X2 and Jaguar E-Pace

Jaguar has two engines, but in different degrees of boost. Thus, the 2 litre petrol unit produces 249 or 300 hp, and the turbodiesel, also 2-liter, is offered in three power options: 150, 180 and 240 hp.

The drive of all modifications is only full, and the gearbox — a non-alternative 9-band "automatic." The most affordable version of the model is estimated at 2,699,000 rubles, the most expensive in the initial set costs 3,485,000 rubles.

Our test involves a 240-horsepower diesel E-Pace. The BMW X2 is also diesel, its engine develops 190 hp. Of course, it would be better to compare with the "Bavarian" version of Jaguar with a capacity of 180 hp, but in the press park such a car was not found.

On the other hand, these modifications are comparable to each other in terms of dynamics, because the weaker German crossover is noticeably lighter than the opponent.

Jaguar E-Pace D240 has a spacious cabin, is perfectly controlled and knows how to drive not only on the asphalt

It's good when it's not cramped

First, we look at what it's like to be in a squat Bavarian car. It is no secret that the X2 is built on the basis of the model X1 and the salon it has nothing from the "donor" is no different. But the landing here is noticeably lower and the feeling is quite different: if in the X1 you sit as in a bus, then here you are quite like a light, though not as low as in sedans and coupes of the same BMW.

A tight seat with a retractable hamstring perfectly repeats the contours of the body, but may seem like a narrow broad-shouldered sled. Around the driver — already became a classic for "Bavarians" interior with a deployed central console and sticking tablet interface iDrive.

The quality of the finishing materials is excellent, as our test case has an extended leather finish.

The BMW X2 20d xDrive chassis is set on flat asphalt, and steering requires strong hands

Landing in the Jaguar above. It enhances the feeling of a high position behind the wheel of a sloping central console. The seat does not have such a good profile as BMW, but it is convenient to be in it and it is designed for larger sedoks.

The driving area is separated from the passenger by a handrail on the central tunnel. The devices, unlike the rival with analog "saucers", in E-Pace virtual. Climate control regulators have built-in screens with temperature signs — stylish.

The graphics of the screen of the Jaguar interface are excellent, although still slightly inferior to the German competitor, and the convenience of using the secondary functions "Bavarian" ahead. And in the English crossover there are no ceiling handles for passengers, while BMW they are where they are usually looking.

However, in Jaguar you can hold on to the already mentioned handrail. And the quality of the finish is higher than that of the German, primarily due to the best skin design.

Jaguar E-Pace

Passage to the second row is narrow in both cars. However, the convenience of landing and landing (both behind and in front) is the "Englishman" leader, because unlike the opponent there is no need to bend. And the rapids in Jaguar always remain clean, as the doors completely close them — you feel a kinship with Land Rover.

On the legroom again in the leaders of the British crossover: sitting behind the 180-centimetre driver, a passenger of the same height has a gap in front of the knees about 15 cm — in BMW space a third less.

But the expanse above the head rivals are equal — the aforementioned passenger tops the ceiling does not touch even if our test copies of the panoramic roof, eating a couple of centimeters.

BMW X2, rear seats

In the Bavarian car the sofa is located a little low, but its back can be adjusted. But she (backs) has only two positions. Both rivals have climate system deflectors between the front seats and comfortable central armrests with coasters. But if Jaguar provides three sockets on the second row, BMW is only a lighter.

The more spacious trunk boasts an English crossover, despite the fact that the underground "dock" steals the place in the main compartment. In the German car there is no spare wheel in any form (due to the trim of the tires Runflat), in its place — another luggage box.

When folding the back sofa in both cars is a flat floor. And both have an electric drive of the fifth door.

Adrenaline lovers

The tarahtening of the Bavarian diesel is well heard in the cabin, although the vibrations are minimal. From the place X2 moves briskly and in any modes of movement reacts to pressing the accelerator pedal. Turbopause is almost not felt, and the "automatic" switches in a timely manner even in the "standard" mode.BMW X2 20d xDrive 2019 test drive

You can "spur" the car with "sports" settings, but in most cases there is enough "standard". In short, the crossover accelerates with a "fire", except that the turbodiesel does not sound melodic. The brakes are acumen. Perhaps, even too much — require just a jewelry dosage, otherwise the car will rise sharply "colom."

The engine of the "Englishman" at the same volume is more forced, and the difference in acceleration dynamics, despite similar passport data, is very noticeable. But the increased pressure of the supercharger also increased the turbopause, multiplied by delays of the "automatic."

As a result, at low speeds of the engine sometimes have to wait two or three seconds until the acceleration begins. What is especially unpleasant, for example, when leaving the yard on the roadway, when you need to quickly jump into the resulting clearance between cars.

However, the antidote to this "tightness" is — "sports" mode, although sometimes the car becomes too sharp in it. But the engine here works more smoothly and noticeably quieter than that of the Bavarian crossover. And the brakes are better tuned — the slowdown is dosed without problems.

Jaguar's steering is sharper than bmw's (2.3 turns from stop to stop versus 2.7), and lighter. The "Bavarian" lamb is so heavy that it tires when driving the city. And this weight, in our opinion, goes to the detriment of informativeness, because the constant background effort cloudes the feedback.

However, the car responds to its turns clearly and without hitholes, as befits BMW. But the E-Pace responds to the controls no less quickly and accurately, and the feedback of its lighter steering wheel is higher than that of the German.

On the straight "Englishman" behaves very steadily, almost does not respond to irregularities and ruts. But most of all Jaguar as a true representative of the feline family loves twists.

Despite the high center of gravity, it famously and almost without rolls passes turns under the squeal of rubber, in the limit almost not showing insufficient rotation. And the driver feels a real adrenaline rush!

However, almost more pleasure on the winding road gives the Bavarian "trotter." If you change into a BMW right after the Jaguar, you feel that you are sitting almost in a sports car. You are much closer to the asphalt, the rolls seem not, and the limit of grip of low-profile tires is even higher.

However, upon reaching this limit begins to slide the front — stronger than that of the English competitor. And when driving on the motorway there is a reaction to the rut, aggravated by a heavy steering wheel, which at times literally bursts out of hand.

Jaguar trunk

The Jaguar's trunk is more spacious. Under the floor is a "dock"

BMW X2

The "Bavarian" has no spare wheel, but there is a box for things

Sports crossovers, as a rule, do not have a high smoothness of course, and our wards are no exception. Especially BMW, equipped with a tougher than standard, M-suspension. His saddles are aware of all the cracks on the road, not to mention the larger irregularities (but to break the suspension is almost impossible). And the Bavarian crossover annoys the buzz from the tires.

In Jaguar, the rubber is almost audible, and the suspension is clearly softer than the "little thing", although on the "big" and it significantly shakes the sed. On the primer, both detect the passenger suspension moves. As for off-road, here is clearly preferable To the English crossover — due to better geometric traversal.

Jaguar wins as a result of our test drive. The E-Pace has more versatile abilities on the asphalt and is not afraid to leave it. And the cabin with the trunk of the "Englishman" is more spacious.

BMW — the car is uncompromising. Its owner will have to put up with a stiff suspension and imperfect noise insulation. However, the pleasure of riding the X2 can compensate for these shortcomings: if you are a person with gasoline in the blood.
